ROMNEY, W.Va. — Nancy Ellen Childs, 82, of Romney, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012 at the Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney.
Nancy was born on Aug. 23, 1930 in Lumberport, W.Va., daughter of the late George and Ruth (Matthew) Wire.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Sterling Rich; and one step-brother, Dr. George Wire.
Nancy grew up in Lovetts-ville, Va., graduating from Lovettsville High School in 1947. She graduated from Shepherd College with a Bachelors Degree in Education in 1952. Nancy taught two years at Lovettsville High School before moving to Washington, D.C. to work for the F.B.I. She married John E. Childs in 1954 and moved to Romney in 1958. Besides raising her family of five, she taught at the West Virginia School for the Deaf from 1967-69. The family moved to Savage, and Nancy worked at Mineral Pigments in Laurel. In 1975 upon moving back to Romney, Nancy worked at the DHHR retiring with 20 years of service. She enjoyed walking each morning with “The Walkers” and meeting with another group for dinner each week.
Nancy is survived by her husband of 58 years, John Edwin Childs Jr.; three sons, Mark Dee Childs and wife, Barbra, Winchester, V, Joel A. Childs, Romney, Noel E. Childs, Ranson, W.Va.; two daughters, Mona Louise Childs, Romney, Beth Ann Carter and husband, Mark, Springfield, Va.; one step-brother, Charles Wire, Phoenix, Ariz.; one step-sister, Betty Denaux, Salisbury, N.C.; four grandchildren, Morgan and Ashley Carter, Matthew and Lindsay Childs; and several special nieces and nephews
The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral service will be Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012 at 10 a.m. at the Romney First United Methodist Church with Dr. Roy Knight officiating.
Interment will be the Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney.
