CUMBERLAND — Marvin C. “Buck” Bowers, 88, of Cumberland, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 11, 1924, in Jerome, Va., he was the son of the late Wayne G. and Ollie T. (Miller) Bowers. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Rose DeHaven who was mother of Tom and Shirley; second wife, Helen Bowers; his stepson, Terry Easton; his sisters, Hilda Evans and Ora Hamilton and brother-in-law Jim Evans.
Marvin was a United States Navy veteran during the World War II Era. He was in the Pacific Theater and served on the U.S.S. Chandeleur (AV10). He was discharged in 1946. Buck retired from the Kelly Springfield Tire Company in 1983 after 40 years of service. Mr. Bowers was a member of the Oldtown V.F.W., the Goodfellowship Club. His favorite hobby was watching NASCAR races. Buck was baptized into the Lutheran Church in Jerome, Va., when he was a young boy. He loved to tell stories of the customs of his ancestors from the Shenandoah Valley. When Buck was born, Dr. Moomaun came to the family home in a horse drawn carriage to deliver him.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Bowers; one son, Thomas Bowers and wife Kathy, of Cincinnati, Ohio; one daughter, Shirley Brownell and husband Gene, of Green Back, Tenn; step children Rusty Clark, David Clark, Lynn Kern, Mark Easton and Charles Easton; one sister, Arlene Evans; grandchildren Scott Bowers, Matthew Bowers, David Bowers, Daniel Bowers, Thomas Brownell and Sarah Brownell and one great-grandson, Conner Bowers.
At Marvin’s request, he will be cremated.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, from noon to 2 p.m.
A memorial service will be conducted in the funeral home on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, following the visitation at 2 p.m. with Pastor Steve Beeman officiating.
Inurnment will be held privately at a later date.
