GEORGE E. YONKER [Little Orleans]

— LITTLE ORLEANS — George Elmer Yonker, 88, of Little Orleans, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at his home.

Born Dec. 22, 1924, in Little Orleans, Mr. Yonker was the son of the late Edward Yonker and Bessie (Mae) Yonker. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Delmer, Ralph, and Edward Yonker; and three sisters, Erma Alexander, Mary Anderson, and Zella “Jimmi” Minnick.

George was a United States Army/Air Corps veteran during World War II having served in Guam. He retired from the Maryland State Highway Administration in 1987 with 30 years of service. George was a life-long farmer. He was a member of the American Legion Post 26, Hancock, for 63 years and served as a member of the Honor Guard. He was also a member of the Berkeley Springs, W.Va., V.F.W. 4019, and a life-member of the Orleans Volunteer Fire Company. George was also a member of the Piney Plaines Methodist Church.

George was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He instilled a hard work ethics, devotion, dedication, and strong family values in his children.

George is survived by his wife of 60 years, Violet (Shipley) Yonker; his children, Janet Elbin and husband, Leon, Artemas, Pa., Judy Sowers and husband, John, Little Orleans, Dotty Chase and husband, Joe, Morgantown, W.Va., David Yonker and fiancée, Jennifer Fisher, Little Or-leans, Danny Yonker and wife, Lauri, Smithsburg, and Brian Yonker and wife, Annette, Little Orleans; and his sister, Polly Ward, Warfordsburg, Pa.; and a sister-in-law, Wilda Yonker, Little Orleans.

George will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Shannon Elbin and wife, Trisha, Aaron Elbin, Eric Sowers and wife, Shannon, Duane Chase, JoAnn Rosena and husband, John, John Chase and wife, Melissa, Michael Yonker and wife, Missy, Lisa Vance and husband, Brian, Keshia Fisher and fiancé, Jeremy McCusker, Brooke Pryor, Emily Pyles and husband, Danny, Claire Berk-heimer and husband, Tim, Sam Yonker, Adam Yonker and fiancée, Morgann Clingerman, Chad Yonker and fiancée, Leah Funk, Chandra Yonker and friend, Ben Schindel; his great-grandchildren, Haylee Pyles, Addisyn Pyles, Brady Yonker, Nicholas Vance, Rylan McCusker, Jaden Yonker, Bryant Yonker, Eli Berk-heimer, Matthew Chase, Justin Chase, and Rachel Wolfe; his great-great-grand-daughter, Aulbree Wolfe; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland,  ( on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013 at noon with the Rev. John Close officiating with assistance from the Rev. Jeff Hawbaker.

Interment will be in Piney Plaines Cemetery.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the care and concern given by the Western Maryland Home Health Care group.
