— CUMBERLAND —  Michael “Mike” Thomas McWhirter, 62, of Cumberland, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2012 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 4, 1950 in Grand Rapids, Mich., he was the son of Phyllis (Brown) McWhirter, Cumberland, and the late James C. McWhirter.

He was also preceded in death by his two sisters,  Judith Ann McWhirter and Margaret “Margie” McWhirter.

Mike graduated from Bishop Walsh High School, class of 1969. He earned an Associate of Arts degree in Forestry from Allegany College of Maryland.

He served in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam Era and belonged to Chapter 172, Vietnam Veterans of America.

He had been a stone mason by trade.

Mr. McWhirter was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

In addition to his mother, Mike is survived by his two daughters, Colleen Pritchard and husband Sam, Austin, Texas, and Katie McWhirter, Austin; his brother, Patrick J. McWhirter, and wife Beverly, Ridgeley, W.Va.; a nephew, Mit-chell McWhirter, Ridgeley; a special niece, Alison Humphrey and husband Chris, Fort Ashby, W.Va.; a great-niece Adaline Humphrey, Fort Ashby; and close friend, Rick Twigg.

As per his request, Michael will be cremated.

A committal service will be conducted in the chapel at Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012 at 1 p.m. Military honors will be accorded by Chapter 172, Vietnam Veterans of America.
