JAMES M. ARMSTRONG [Cumberland]

RAWLINGS — James Morgan Armstrong, of Rawlings, passed away Friday, June 13, 2014, at the Lions Center in Cumberland, at the age of 91.



James was born in Cumberland on Aug. 5, 1922, the son of the late Clement and Hazel Armstrong.



He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Catherine Ann (Dawson) Armstrong; his two children, Donna (Armstrong) Snyder and James Morgan Armstrong II; son-in-law, Robert Snyder; three grandchildren, Melissa Snyder, Jennifer Croce and Teresa Kulish; and five great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Timothy, Caylin, Gabriel and Caden. Surviving siblings are Brownlee Armstrong, Devlin Manor Nursing Home, Lucille Stair, McMullen Highway and Charles William Armstrong, McMullen Highway; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by four of his brothers, John, Neil, Harold and Glenn Armstrong.



James served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a P-47 fighter pilot for three years during World War II, followed by two years in the reserves. He played in the Allegany Fast Pitch Softball League for the Potomac Valley Team for several years. He was a life-long member of the Rawlings United Methodist Church. James was an avid outdoorsman and sportsman and a life member of the National Rifle Association, the North American Hunting Club and was a founding member of the Knobley Mountain Properties Hunting Club. He enjoyed photography as a hobby.



James was employed by Celanese Corporation and Potomac Edison before moving on to Allegany Ballistics Laboratory, where he worked for 29 years, and then was employed at Walter N. Yoder and Sons for 9 years, retiring in 1988.



Friends and family will be


 received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A, Cresaptown, (www.scarpellifh.com), on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, from 5 to 8 p.m.



Services will be conducted at Rawlings United Methodist Church on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Merle Correll and Pastor Patrick Buhrman officiating.



Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens following the service.



Pallbearers will be Clem Armstrong, John Strickland, Floyd Umstot, Jake Marker, Bob Armstrong, and Timothy Figueroa. Honorary pallbearers will be William Buchanan Sr., Dave Haines, and Chester Smith.
