Would he have stopped if it had been a little girl?

To the Editor:
Cumberland Times-News

I am writing about a very common problem we have in this area. Recently that problem hit home for my family. On Dec. 30 at about 9 p.m., my dog was hit by a truck on the main road in Carpendale, W.Va., at the Washington Street intersection.

My husband had just put Miley out to use the bathroom, and she got away from him. The truck was a smaller sized with Maryland tags and was heading into Carpendale. The man who was driving never bothered to stop, and Miley was disregarded as if she didn’t matter. Now, I’m not faulting the driver for hitting Miss Miley, she should not have been in the road.

I lost what was like a child to me, and if Miley had actually been a child; would he then have stopped? Or would he simply disregard that child as he did my poor Miley girl. She was a sweet girl, a fat little Basset Hound with many more years left. That was all cut short. The loss of Miley has greatly impacted our family.

I don’t know who the man driving the little pickup was, but he knows. I feel sorry for the type of person that he is. He has shown his character through complete and utter disregard not only for Miley’s life, but for life in general. This man could have stopped and at least apologized, even though there was nothing that could be done to save her. The man made a bad choice and has made a negative impact on my entire family leaving me, my husband and two young sons devastated.

Always remember when driving that it’s not only your life that’s in your hands when you get behind that wheel, but the lives of our furry friends too!!

Thank you for taking the time to hear Miley’s story. She was a good girl. It’s easy to find a good dog, but very hard to find a great dog. Miley was one of the great dogs and has a place forever in my heart.
