Proposed health care does not protect the unborn

To the Editor:
Cumberland Times-News

It is a real concern that no protections are in place to prevent the full scale taking of the life of the unborn. So far, the only bill in place is the Hyde Amendment that prohibits federal funding of Medicaid recipients.

The government can and will fund abortion in every state through funding through private insurers to cover them using our tax dollars. $550 dollars will be taken from Medicare, the elderly, the disabled. Is this the reform we were hoping for?

The Stupak amendment, which protects the rights of conscience for health care workers, was denied a vote, which also includes disallowance of the use of our tax dollars to fund abortion.

It is a bill that disregards the will of the people and while we keep hearing that we need it, we don’t want it. It is expensive to the tune or over a trillion dollars, but is on the backs of the vulnerable to pay for it.

This goes beyond a health care bill, as our health is not core to this bill. It is essentially a takeover of our very lives. It will enable every aspect of our lives to be controlled, down to our last penny and breath.

Please reconsider that those who did not afford or chose not to purchase insurance will be penalized to pay the money that could have purchased insurance, and what about the street people who really always got care and could not get it for sure in this mandatory system. They will have to pay and with what and will not have access at all to care in this system.

The number for the U.S. Capitol switchboard is (202) 224-3121. Just tell them the zip code you live in and you will be forwarded to your own legislator’s office. Isn’t this what we pay our taxes for? To be served, not mandated. This is America, at least for now.

In all good faith,

Sr. Marie Teresa Tellier, R.N.
