It was a different time, and there were things he misses

We are living in a time when there is a mixture of depression and inflation.

I grew up during the Depression of the 1930s, had to hoe corn for 10 cents an hour, a pair of work shoes cost $1. We bought a new 1937 Buick right out of the showroom window, trading our old Essex 1928 model and paid $700 cash.

I grew up on the home farm at Aurora, W.V.a, that has been in the family since 1842, originally owned by Great-grandfather William Henry Grimes.

Many of us were of Amish background and/or Swiss German. I can remember using the German language as a youngster. We lived a way of life that was wholesome, close family ties and a devotion to the land and its people.

Many times money was not used. We helped each other and did not expect pay. I miss this.

I wrote many stories about these times in my life for the Glades Star, a Garrett County historical publication. Many people have talked to me about the stories that I wrote.

I just wanted to relive these times over again any way that I could.

The young people today just cannot seem to understand or don’t want to hear or comprehend another time and culture.

Shame on them. They miss so much.

  • No secrets No secrets

The idea of fracturing for natural gas makes many people anxious about potential harmful effects. For that reason alone, it is incumbent on Maryland government to require full disclosure of chemicals used in the process.

  • Remember, we’re not immune to extinction

I’d like to pose a theoretical scenario to Cal Thomas.

If a medical specialist said, “Cal, you’ve got a serious physical problem. Do nothing and you’ll die soon. Follow my prescription, which involves certain life-style changes, and there’s a good probability you’ll live, even if your life may be a bit more constrained than now.”

  • Tell legislators to do what is right for America’s vets

Without our veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice, where would America be today? It is anyone’s guess, however certainly not the Freedom and Liberty we enjoy.

  • Opposition and inclusion understood

Those of you who have been here before know how I feel about the late great Len Bias, who I will remember foremost as Leonard Bias, the polite, spindly Bambi-eyed kid from Hyattsville’s Northwestern High School, who could throw a dunk through the floor, yet had the most beautiful jump shot I have ever seen.
