Forum seeks views on higher education

Local residents will be able to join in a national discussion when a forum on the future of higher education is held April 2 at 5 p.m. at  Allegany College of Maryland.

“The Future of Higher Education: How Should Higher Education Help Us Create the Society We Want?” is a collaborative discussion intended to draw a wide variety of perspectives. The local forum is part of an effort called Democracy Commitment, a national initiative aimed at engaging community college students in civic learning and the democratic process.

The forum is not only for students. Parents, elected and appointed public officials and the general public are invited to participate and express views on higher education and how it can help the United State remain competitive in the global economy, repair an ailing society and ensure access of opportunity.

Democracy Commitment began in November 2011 and Allegany College of Maryland is one of the first 100 community colleges nationwide to be a part of the movement. The effort is funded in part by the Kettering Foundation.

Those planning to participate in the forum are asked to RSVP before April 2 so that they can receive a packet of materials about the higher education discussion.

For more information contact ACM faculty member and Democracy Commitment coordinator Kurt Hoffman at 301-784-5113. To RSVP phone Kara Riley at 301-784-5606. RSVPs may also be submitted from the Democracy Commitment’s events page of the college website, www.allegany.edu.

File this one under the We Thought We’d Heard Everything category: A man who attempted the armed robbery of a pizza shop is now suing the pizzeria and the employees who tackled him and wrestled his gun away during the holdup.

The idea of fracturing for natural gas makes many people anxious about potential harmful effects. For that reason alone, it is incumbent on Maryland government to require full disclosure of chemicals used in the process.

I’d like to pose a theoretical scenario to Cal Thomas.

If a medical specialist said, “Cal, you’ve got a serious physical problem. Do nothing and you’ll die soon. Follow my prescription, which involves certain life-style changes, and there’s a good probability you’ll live, even if your life may be a bit more constrained than now.”
