Why do some, but not all, have to make up the lost days?

Hello, parents. I’m sure by now everybody has heard about the school makeup days for our children (“Allegany County students to make up three days,” March 12 Times-News, Page 1B).

The reason for these days is so the schools can get in their required 180 days.

What I want to know about this magical 180 days is why the Cumberland, Flintstone and Oldtown students have to make them up, when Mountain Ridge would need another three days on top of the days already assigned to complete their 180 days.

Why do our children in our area have to go to school when they don’t? Instead of all of Allegany County schools using the assigned makeup days, why doesn’t the Mountain Ridge school district make the days up for our district, as our district went to school for them over the winter while they got the day off?

If 180 days is so important, then Mountain Ridge area needs a few more days tacked on to them to complete their year.

I plan to go to the board of education or the state with this because I want a answer why our children have to go and theirs don’t.

I also will make the point that they did not complete 180 days for the school year, therefore it is an incomplete year.

If you want to talk about saving money and fairness, then either take these makeup days from our children and have them go to complete them and save thousands of dollars for the days in transportation or leave the days and tack the extra days Mountain Ridge district missed onto them at the end of the year.

I will let everybody know what the board of education has to say about this, and the state of Maryland if need be.

I’d like to pose a theoretical scenario to Cal Thomas.

If a medical specialist said, “Cal, you’ve got a serious physical problem. Do nothing and you’ll die soon. Follow my prescription, which involves certain life-style changes, and there’s a good probability you’ll live, even if your life may be a bit more constrained than now.”
