Thanks to all who keep the ‘Friday After Five’ going

I just wanted to say that I feel very fortunate to live in Cumberland.

I have been enjoying the “Friday After Five” and the Saturdays at Canal Place for the past 14 years.

I always look forward to the Friday and Saturday entertainment and spending time with old friends on the mall, and just socializing with friendly people from other areas.

I think the entertainment is superb. There is a variety of entertainment to satisfy nearly every taste in music; from country to rock ‘ n’ roll, jazz to oldies and from the Big Band Era to Gospel.

You can move from corner to corner and enjoy the variety. Many people who cannot afford expensive concerts are able to enjoy the music and  dance if they wish, or just hang out.

I feel so lucky to be a part of all this. We as a community, are fortunate to have Ed Mullaney as our downtown manager. He and his staff do an excellent job of providing us with entertainment during the summer months.

This venue gives experienced bands a chance to perform and new groups an opportunity to gain experience, while providing a service to the community.

The handicapped have an opportunity to enjoy this “evening out” as the mall is accessible to those who might have special needs.

I went to Canal Place on the Fourth of July. The Chinese Bandits performed followed by the fireworks display. Everyone in the crowd was polite and courteous. I didn’t hear any foul language and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. It was just a delightful evening.

A big “Thank You” to those who made this event possible. I thank Ed Mullaney, the staff, the bands and performers and most of all, the sponsors. Without you these special events would cease.

I am proud of my community.

File this one under the We Thought We’d Heard Everything category: A man who attempted the armed robbery of a pizza shop is now suing the pizzeria and the employees who tackled him and wrestled his gun away during the holdup.

The idea of fracturing for natural gas makes many people anxious about potential harmful effects. For that reason alone, it is incumbent on Maryland government to require full disclosure of chemicals used in the process.

I’d like to pose a theoretical scenario to Cal Thomas.

If a medical specialist said, “Cal, you’ve got a serious physical problem. Do nothing and you’ll die soon. Follow my prescription, which involves certain life-style changes, and there’s a good probability you’ll live, even if your life may be a bit more constrained than now.”
