To the Editor:
Here’s another instance where Maryland is grossly violating our constitutional rights.
On April 23, I purchased a .308 rifle. Since it has an adjustable stock (3 inches) Maryland decides it needs to be treated as a pistol and invokes an unconstitutional seven-day waiting period. As of June 29 I’ve been waiting 67 days — that’s correct — 67 days! I know of many other Maryland law-abiding citizens that are being violated the same way.
This act is an unbelievable violation of the United States Constitution. Maryland citizens are being treated as guilty until proven innocent. This is not the American way. I always heard we were innocent until proven guilty, but evidently that’s not the way in the socialist state of Maryland.
Waiting 67 days, and counting, on a seven-day waiting period is unacceptable. If I were a West Virginia resident I could have walked into a gun shop, bought the exact same rifle, waited five or 10 minutes while they called in a background check and walked out with my legal rifle minutes later.
Why in the world has it taken Maryland 67 days to do what West Virginia accomplishes in 10 minutes? Maryland has some explaining to do to its people. We deserve and demand it.
There’s little doubt Gov. (Martin) O’Malley is sitting in the Statehouse with a big smile on his face as he allows this to happen. Remember, he just signed an unconstitutional gun bill into law. He really thinks he’s accomplished something — all he accomplished is a violation of the rights of law-abiding Maryland residents.
Gov. O’Malley, you were not elected to office to violate our rights, raise our taxes and add ridiculous fees to our businesses and residents but that’s exactly what you’ve done!
I remember when Maryland officials were attempting to get the lottery in Maryland. Most of the people were against it because it was gambling. Our government told us if we let them start a lottery they would reduce or remove Maryland sales tax. Well, guess what? They’ve got their lottery, it’s going strong, so what has Maryland done with the sales tax? They’ve just increased it from 5 percent to 6 percent. Now they’ve got a casino at Rocky Gap and at other sites in Maryland. They claimed it would ease the tax burden on us; more lies?
Gov. O’Malley, you’re an elected official which means you’re a public servant; you work for me and the good people of Maryland. It’s time you listen to us and do what we tell you. You’re not a king or a god; start serving the people of Maryland and not yourself and your political machine.
