It is only the private sector, not government, that creates jobs

Kevin Shaffer doesn’t understand that government does not create jobs. Its function is taxing and spending — not job creation.

The only jobs government creates are civil servant jobs — hence they go in the expense and debit column, because they are expenditures.

Real job creation is only done by the private sector and for the private sector to come to an area it looks for a welcoming climate. There is nothing welcoming about the state of Maryland which is nothing but a high tax state under Martin O’Malley looking to spend money on welfare and illegal aliens.

He has turned the state over to the control of labor unions. Why do you think jobs and companies are leaving Maryland and moving to Virginia?

The BOC can do nothing about job-hostile state policies emanating from Annapolis. We are stuck with one of the worst governors in the nation. He runs large budget deficit and then looks to high tax on essentials like gasoline to pay for this wanton spending. Martin O’Malley makes you long for Spiro Agnew.

So if you wonder about job creation try looking at the horrendous policies of the current governor and you will understand why jobs do not come to Maryland.

  • If we don’t sell it to them, somebody else will

The front page article on coal exports by AP writer Dina Cappiello is one of the most asinine and biased “news” articles I’ve read (“Not in my backyard: U.S. sending dirty coal abroad,” July 29 Times-News, Page 1A).

  • Not a villain Not a villain

Time was that we looked for heroes. Heroes of the make-believe variety have sold a lot of comic books. We also had real-life heroes like Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, whose deaths the whole nation mourned.
These days, we seem to be more interested in looking for villains. “Vote for me because I’m the good guy” has taken a back seat to “Don’t vote for him, because he’s the bad guy.”

Once again, the Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization has asked the Allegany County commissioners for public funding (“Cemetery group renews funding request,” July 25 Times-News, Page 1A).

  • About time About time

Although many Cumberland streets are in need of repair and improvements, the decision by city and county officials to address Greene Street is a good one.
