To the Editor:
I am a parent of an 8-year-old asthmatic child. A few weeks ago I started researching camps that catered to children with asthma.
I was surprised to find that the closest ones to our area were in Baltimore and Pittsburgh. I called both camps to get information and the one that is in Baltimore called me back.
I spoke to Ceal Curry with Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. We talked for about an hour about Camp Superkids located in Summit Grove, New Freedom, Pa. (just across the Maryland line).
It is a summer camp for children with asthma 7 1/2 to 12 years old. It has been around for 20 years and is staffed by respiratory therapists, nurses, physical assistants, U.S. Marines, high school and college students.
There is a fee, however there are scholarships available and Ms. Ceal told me that the fee should not stop me from applying because there are several ways to get sponsorships for children whose parents cannot afford it.
The camp is a week long, over-night camp in August that services all kids in Maryland. I am in the respiratory program at Allegany College of Maryland. My son and I are going to go to the camp this summer.
Per the suggestion of the Cumberland Times-News, I am hopeful that this letter will spark the interest of other parents in the area who want their asthmatic child better educated about their asthma and ways to manage and prevent attacks as well as have summer fun with other kids in a safe environment with staff that know how to take care of their asthmatic needs.
If I can get a group of children from the Western Maryland area together then I will look in to having fundraisers to pay for transportation to the camp. If anyone is interested, please send me an email at email@example.com.
