It’s not a roundabout; it’s a ‘stupid-about’; get rid of it

It’s been reported that 15,000 vehicles pass through the now infamous Route 220-Interstate 68 roundabout area daily.

Dear State Highway Administration: Thank you for all the excuses and meaningless trivia associated with your roundabout plan (“Engineers set to iron out issues in U.S. Route 220 roundabout,” April 4 Times-News, Page 1A).

It was informative to know that many tractor-trailer drivers are not up to par, there is a seven-foot dropoff, there’s a 3 percent slope, we now have u-about super computers, and wasting the best part of $3.2 million dollars is not technically a loss and looks better in 2D than 3D.

Let’s get real. It’s not just big-rig drivers who don’t like your plan, it is everybody! Nearly to the person when asked, the word stupid comes up.

The original plan was to close the I-68 eastbound access ramp at Fletcher Drive.

With Fletcher closed, the SHA somehow believed that if they opened the roundabout people would drive clear out Greene Street to Route 220 and I-68 east.

After much protest the SHA relented and redesigned the Fletcher ramp instead. (Good job, SHA.)

Now that Fletcher remains open and safer the SHA, is still in denial. They still believe some mysterious person is going to use their “stupid-about” for access to I-68 east.

In the meanwhile, 15,000 vehicles a day are going to be jammed into a narrow one lane 10 mph bottleneck.

SHA, please stop wasting our money and playing us for fools! Do what everyone except yourselves want and put the road back to how it was.
