Hospital systems in Allegany, Frederick and Washington counties have signaled their intention to join forces in meeting the rapidly altering face of health care.
The Western Maryland Health System, Frederick Regional Health System and Meritus Health in Hagerstown plan to work together in improving quality of care, reducing costs and focusing on population health management for the whole region.
A factor cited for the move is the fact that the Affordable Care Act (the so-called “Obamacare” will hold hospitals to new standards of providing care.
At the same time, the act will reward health systems for community outreach efforts that benefit the overall health of their region’s people.
The hospitals will start by creating a regional health board that will explore affiliation with other hospitals and find ways to increase cooperation.
Times are changing. This move will not only help to meet those changes, but will undoubtedly serve to improve the delivery of health care in our region.
