West Virginia, Johnny Cash, coal miners honored on stamps

While this most likely won’t fall under the category of the most earth-shattering letter to the editor you will read today, it is still big doings for those of us here at the U.S. Postal Service.

John Denver had it right when he sang, “Almost Heaven, West Virginia.” Come June 20 of this year, the postal service will issue its (Forever) West Virginia Statehood stamp.

Later this summer the postal service will be unveiling our “Made in America — Building a Nation” series.

One block of the stamp honors the hard-working coal miners who helped in making our country great. Many of us have family members who have worked in the nearby mines in the tri-state region.

This month, The Man in Black, Johnny Cash, also makes and appearance, not live at Folsom Prison but on his very own stamp.

So when you get a chance stop down at your friendly local post office or go to our website at www.usps.com and check out these or any of our many services we offer to all. We deliver — for you!

  • President and Obamacare: Who needs Congress?

Being a fellow from a small town like Cumberland I don’t always really understand what’s going on in Washington. But I have watched a few houses being built over the years. I even helped some with one house, but my brother fired me from that work pretty quickly, mainly because it was his house being built.

  • It’s a secret It’s a secret

Could someone enlighten us about why not even the names of the two entities bidding on development of the Footer Dye Works building can be divulged?
A Times-News article about the bids included an explanation from a lawyer for the attorney general’s office about the need to keep the names and other information secret at this time. Despite that, the logic of not divulging at least a little more information escapes us.

Now that Maryland has become the 17th state to (finally) decriminalize possession of marijuana, one could say that the legislature and governor should be patted on the back for doing the right thing.
