This fine teacher’s influence extends beyond the classroom

CUMBERLAND — Anita Comfort was recently recognized in the Cumberland Times-News as the VFW State of Maryland Teacher of the Year in an award ceremony held at Calvary Christian Academy, where she teaches high school English.

Mrs. Comfort, as she is known to her students, is well deserving of the award; however, I believe it is important for the community to know that her influence extends well beyond the classroom.

While working with her at CCA, Anita encouraged me to pursue a college education, so at an age closer to retirement than to college, I began my studies.

Anita and I have had many “geeky English” chats, as we call them.

Whether it is a discussion on an obscure detail of grammar or a conference to unravel a work of postmodern literature, she has always been available to talk, much to the chagrin of our husbands.

Because of Anita I am about to graduate from Frostburg State University with a double major in English and fine art & design.

Anita’s contribution to her students, to me, and to our community exemplifies the high standards and excellence of the teaching profession.
