The annual Let’s Beautify Cumberland has for the past 15 years been a highly successful volunteer event that’s accomplished just what its name suggests.
Organizers have been busy getting ready for this year’s cleanup and beautification, which is tied to the annual Cumberland Day of Caring and Sharing on May 17.
What might be called the kickoff will be the annual downtown plant sale which always draws big crowds and will run May 2-4 from 9:30 a.m to 6 p.m.
Plant varieties from more than 20 participating local orchards, farms, greenhouses and businesses will be featured, as will the work of students in the masonry program at the Allegany County Center for Career and Technical Education.
The Let’s Beautify Cumberland volunteers don’t limit their work to just one day a year. Some of them are busy throughout the spring and summer to maintain the projects they’ve already initiated.
Last year, more than 700 volunteers participated, including groups of people from various businesses and organizations.
The Let’s Beautify Cumberland! committee meets at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month at City Hall.
