  • Pa. bear hunt record possible?
    Last year’s black bear harvest was the second highest on record, and weather permitting, the Pennsylvania Game Commission expects hunters to have similar opportunities afield in the upcoming bear seasons.

  • Lost polar bear hunter rescued
    Battling hypothermia, a 17-year-old hunter stranded on a floating chunk of ice shot and killed a polar bear while trapped for more than a day before being rescued Monday in the Canadian Arctic.

  • Photos of deer hunters used
    The Cumberland Times-News will display photos of successful deer hunters in the Rod & Gun publication in January. However, some of the better photographs may be used on the Outdoors page in Sunday newspapers. Some photos may be rejected for technical or aesthetic reasons.

    On Monday, Nov. 2, Steve Michael was driving a coal truck on state Route 42 on Scherr, W.Va., Hill and saw dead bear in a ditch, two deer sparring in the woods and a black panther crossing the road.

  • Sleeping Oregon hunter shot, killed
    Authorities say a 14-year-old boy is dead and his cousin is in custody after a bullet came through the wall of the motor home the boy was sleeping in at a central Oregon hunting camp and struck him in the head.

  • Trio charged with jacklighting
    On Oct. 31, the Maryland Natural Resources Police charged three people with poaching violations near Finzel. Steven Andrew Durst, 22, Grantsville, Aaron Dean Wilburn, 19, Bittinger and Ashley Renee Baker, 23, Grantsville, were charged with casting the rays of light with a weapon in possession.

  • Public shooting
    The Fort Hill Rifle and Pistol Club will offer the hunting public opportunities to sight in firearms before the annual deer seasons begin.
