No road kills yet this year

A slightly decomposed male bear, estimated to weigh 200 pounds, was discovered in the woods near Amish Road in Garrett County about two weeks ago. The Maryland Natural Resources Police is investigating the situation.

Clarissa Harris, biologist for the Maryland Wildlife and Heritage Service, said Wednesday that thus far in 2008 there have been no confirmed deaths of bears on Maryland highways. “That’s highly unusual,” Harris said. “Usually we get a loner road kill in January or February, then they start being regular in March and really pick up in April.”

To report bear incidents to the Maryland Wildlife and Heritage Service, call (301) 334-4255 in Garrett County and (301) 777-2136 in Allegany County.
