33 road-killed bears

There have been 33 bears killed on Maryland highways this year, according to the unofficial count by the Cumberland Times-News.



On Oct. 17, a 48-pound female cub was struck and killed on Cranesville Road in Garrett County.



An illegally killed 97-pound bear was found by a landowner Oct. 18 alongside Lowery Road near Corriganville in Allegany County. The bear had been shot with a small-caliber firearm, according to Clarissa Harris of the Maryland Wildlife and Heritage Service. An investigation by the Maryland Natural Resources Police is under way.
