As you read this, black bears are emerging from their dens in Western Maryland. Here is a recap of confirmed bear mortalities thus far during 2013.

On Jan. 1, a 178-pound male bear was struck and killed on Interstate 68 at the Vocke Road exit in LaVale.

On Feb. 7, a 108-pound male bear that was severely injured from a car strike on Fort Hill Road in Garrett County was put down by the Maryland Wildlife & Heritage Service.

An unofficial count maintained by the Times-News during 2012 indicated that 52 bears died on Maryland roadways during the year.
