Matched set

Times-News columnist Dave Long was spring gobbler hunting in West Virginia in May 2013 when, not far apart, he found a matched set of nice 10-point deer antlers. Rich Rogers, Romney, wildlife biologist for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, said shedding begins during the second half of December with the bulk of the antlers being dropped in January. Bucks in poor physical condition will shed a bit earlier. A few hold onto the antlers into February, but it is rare, Rogers said.
