25 years of ‘Outdoor Maryland’

OWINGS MILLS — A one-hour, primetime special of Maryland Public Television’s long-running “Outdoors Maryland” series will be broadcast on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Marking the program’s 25th anniversary and its quarter-century partnership with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the broadcast will feature a look back to early stories such as the hunt for the giant hellbender salamander (it was found) and the story of a Potomac River fishing expedition of now-retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor (she caught a largemouth bass).  Viewers’ favorite stories will be highlighted, and behind-the-scenes features will be included in the 60-minute program.

In its 25-year run, “Outdoors Maryland” has covered roughly 700 individual stories from across Maryland and has earned 37 regional Emmy Awards. Producer Mike English has steered the program for the past 22 years.

The anniversary special will be rebroadcast at midnight on April 3 and 8 p.m. on May 29.
