52 black bears die on Md. roads during 2012

— With the Christmas day death of a 120-pound male bear at the intersection of state Route 77 and Catoctin Hollow Road at Thurmont in Frederick County, the count of dead bruins on Maryland roads rose to 52 for 2012, according to the Times-New unofficial tally.

A new tabulation for 2013 began on Jan. 1 when a 178-pound male bear died in the westbound lane of Interstate 68 at the Vocke Road exit.
