The number of bears to have died on Maryland roadways this year has risen to 19, according to an unofficial tally kept by the Cumberland Times-News.
On July 15, a sow bear weighing 172 pounds was struck and killed on Interstate 68 near the Lower New Germany exit.
Bear sightings are being reported in Brunswick in Frederick County, according to Clarissa Harris of the Maryland Wildlife & Heritage Service.
A large bear was grazed by a vehicle on the morning of July 16 on state Route 51 in Allegany County near Nine Mile Hill. The bear disappeared over the guardrail and there was little or no damage to the car.
