Apply through August for permit to hunt a black bear in Maryland
As of Aug. 13, 1,235 applications had been received by the Maryland Wildlife & Heritage Service for the 380 bear hunting permits that will be drawn via lottery on Sept. 3.
The hunting season is Oct. 21-26. Applications will be accepted through August at www.dnr.state.md.us. There is a $15 nonrefundable fee.
A year ago, 4,027 people applied for 340 permits and checked in 92 bears.
This will be the state’s 10th bear hunt in modern times. The season has been closed for more than 50 years before it was put back in place in 2004.
The hunt takes place in Garrett and Allegany counties. Residents of those two counties are given preference in the drawing.
