Titans grab Pen-Mar title

Tri-State splits with Cumberland, takes series 2-1

From Staff Reports
Cumberland Times-News

CRESAPTOWN — Mike Carter’s two home runs accounted for six RBIs in leading the Tri-State Titans to a 9-5 victory in the second game of a Sunday doubleheader with the Cumberland Orioles in the third and deciding game of the Pen-Mar Series championship at Bel Air Field.

The Orioles had tied the series with an 8-6 victory in the first game of the day and the second of the series. The Titans, behind Carter’s two blasts — a first-inning grand slam and then a two-run shot in the fifth inning — captured the championship after it was decided, due to the number of players returning to college next weekend, the best of five series would be trimmed to a best of three.

In the deciding game, the Titans jumped on top 5-0 behind Carter’s slam. They made it 7-1 with a two-run fourth and took a 9-1 lead on Carter’s second homer in the fifth.

Cumberland made it close with four runs in the bottom of the fifth highlighted by Cody Ellsworth’s three-run double.

The Titans’ Matt Wright had three base hits and scored twice. Josh Logsdon singled and doubled with two RBIs and Bill Davis had two singles.

Chad Chambers led Cumberland with three hits and an RBI. Joe Durham had two hits and Shawn Lindner an RBI single.

In the opening game, winning complete-game pitcher Tony Fetters’ grand slam tied the game at 4-4 and sparked the Orioles to the 8-6 victory after Tri-State had taken a 4-0 lead after the first inning.

Mike Hutchinson and Durham led Cumberland with two base hits each. Chambers had an RBI double. Carter had a solo home run in the fifth inning for the Titans. He also singled. Josh Logsdon and Derek Hetz each had two base hits.

Tri-State is planning to participate in the state tournament to be held Saturday, Aug. 29, at Harford Community College. Addtional details about the tournament will be provided at a later date.
