Realtor warns of local rental property scam - 11/21

CUMBERLAND — A local real estate agent has issued a warning concerning a scam involving advertising of for-sale properties that are being shown on Craig’s List as being for rent.

“I know of three situations where young couples saw these properties on Craig’s List, got excited about them because rental properties are hard to find and then sent money as directed in the scam,” said Terry McKenzie.

Scam victims are advised to obtain a money order for the deposit and first month’s rent and that the rental agreement and key will then be sent to them.

“Once that money is sent in, it is gone. We have to get this thing stopped. The bottom line is if a property is for rent you need to go by the information on the sign posted at the property and deal with the property owner,” said McKenzie.

McKenzie said he would file a formal complaint about the scam with the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office.
