— CUMBERLAND — A city man was arrested Monday after he allegedly threatened to burn down Washington Middle School.

The threat was made when the man became upset while meeting with school officials, police said.

Darnell Louis Powell, 46, was charged with three counts, including arson threat and disturbing operations of a school following the incident. He re-mained jailed Tuesday in lieu of $10,000 bond.

Police said that Powell had met with school officials, became upset, threw a desk to the floor and was then escorted out of the building.

He allegedly stated several times that he would cause damage to the school by burning it down if his child had any other problems at the school.

A warrant was obtained after school officials notified authorities about the incident.

Powell was arrested late Monday after he turned himself in after being contacted by police.
