Tractor-trailer driver charged in Route 51 rollover - 01/13

CUMBERLAND — The driver of the tractor-trailer that overturned on state Route 51 near Spring Gap on Thursday morning has been cited for negligent driving.

Gary C. Sharp, 56, of Edinburg, Va., escaped injuries in the 10 a.m. crash that occurred when he lost control of his rig, causing it to dump about half of its 22 1/2 ton load of fine-powder fertilizer.

Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle En-forcement Division inspectors checked Sharp’s rig Friday as part of the accident investigation.

The highway was closed for about three hours before the rig and spilled fertilizer were removed.

Numerous agencies and a private towing company responded upon alert by the Allegany County 911 center.
