NBCI worker suffers injuries - 07/10

CRESAPTOWN — A dietary worker at the North Branch Correctional Institution was injured Friday when he was allegedly attacked by an inmate, according to Mark Vernarelli, spokesman for the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.

The victim, a five-year veteran, was reportedly struck in the head with a push broom while in the kitchen. He was taken by Cresaptown ambulance to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

The injured prison employee reportedly received treatment that included staples and stitches for his head injuries.

He was accompanied to the hospital by the prison warden following the incident that occurred at about 3 p.m.

Vernarelli said the incident involved a 48-year-old, maximum-security inmate serving life for murder.

“Our internal investigative unit has prepared criminal charges of first-degree assault against the inmate. He has been moved to another DPSCS facility,” said Vernarelli.

The names of the officer and the inmate were withheld “because the investigation is under way,” said Vernarelli.
