CUMBERLAND — A Cumberland man who complained to police about being scratched in the face by his girlfriend ended up under arrest for possession of drug paraphernalia. The girlfriend was charged with second-degree assault, city police said.
Officers responded to an apartment building at 301 Baltimore Ave. on Monday for the domestic disturbance. Wayne Larkin Sorrells III, 32, said the couple had been arguing and when he tried to leave, Rachel Nicole Whorton, 26, started clawing at his face.
Police said that Whorton claimed that she scratched Sorrells in self-defense. Based on the injuries on Sorrells’ face the officers determined Whorton to be the primary aggressor. Before officers left the residence they found two smoking pipes that Sorrells admitted owning.
Sorrells was released from the police station after being issued a criminal citation. Whorton was released by a district court commissioner on her own recognizance.
