— OAKLAND — A fraud scam warning has been issued by the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office concerning bogus telephone calls that are targeting the elderly.

The caller claims to work for the IRS and then advises the victim that he is delinquent in paying his taxes, according to the sheriff’s office.

“The caller instructs individuals to pay a certain amount of money or they will be placed in jail,” said a sheriff’s office spokesman.

The calls have been made to Garrett County residents from various locations, including from the New York area. The caller then asks individuals to wire money to another area to include Jamaica.

“This is a scam. Do not respond to these type of telephone calls and terminate contact with the caller,” said the spoke-sman.
