SOMERSET, Pa. — Thieves removed thousands of dollars worth of copper from disassembled wind turbines stored on a Somerset Township parking lot recently.

Pennsylvania State Police said the theft occurred sometime between May 29 and June 11 from the wind turbine towers that were stored in a parking lot in the 1900 block of North Center Avenue.

An estimated 150 feet of one-inch, black coated copper wire removed from two tower bases in the parking lot was valued at $10,000, police said.

The wire was carried through a wooded area before being loaded into a vehicle at the Happy Valley Curch Parking lot.

The victim, AES Wind Generation of Dallas, Texas, estimated the cost of repair to the damaged wind turbine at $5,000.
