Garrett sheriff issues scam alert - 12/05

OAKLAND — Residents are being reminded not to provide financial or personal information to solicitors who call them on the phone.

Garrett County Sheriff Rob Corley said an Oakland resident complained Monday evening that a call was received from someone portraying to be from the Social Security Administration and Medicare offices.

The caller requested banking and personal information to “update” the resident’s account.

Police believe the call was most likely a scam in an attempt to steal funds from the resident’s bank and checking accounts.

The sheriff’s office warns that such calls may be on the rise during the holiday season.
