House fire was deliberate; victim critical - 12/07

AURORA, W.Va. (AP) — The West Virginia Fire Marshal’s Office said a blaze that left a Preston County man in critical condition was deliberately set.

Assistant Fire Marshal Mackey Ayersman said the explosion and fire in Aurora began around early Tuesday morning, burning 58-year-old Charles Wayne “Randy” Teeter.

Teeter was in critical condition Thursday at the West Penn Burn Center in Pittsburgh.

Ayersman said the gas line to the kitchen stove had been disconnected, and that’s believed to be the source of the explosion.

No one else was home at the time.

Ayersman said a suspicious fire happened at the same location in June, but it wasn’t investigated by his office.

He said it’s unclear whether Teeter is responsible for the explosion.

“What we can say is that he told first responders to just let him die and, ‘I can’t even blow myself up right,”’ Ayersman said. Those comments could indicate that Teeter caused the explosion, he said.
