Bridge accident victim identified - 03/22

OLDTOWN — Wednesday’s accident at the low-water toll bridge that sent a tractor-trailer into the North Branch Potomac occurred when the rig driver “misjudged the angle” as he attempted to enter the bridge, West Virginia State Police said.

The driver, Alberto Martinez, age and address not given, was taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for treatment following the 9:40 a.m. crash.

Trooper First Class M.G. Spence reported the rear passenger side tires of the trailer fell off the bridge and into the river where it became partially submerged in the river.

Martinez was rescued for the overturned rig by Ryan Hill, an employee of nearby Koppers Inc., who is also a lieutenant in the Cresaptown Volunteer Fire Department. Hill pulled open a door of the rig and removed Martinez as the cab was filling with water.

Hill and Martinez stayed on top of the overturned cab of the rig until they were rescued by the Bowling Green Volunteer Fire Department Swiftwater Rescue Team.

Numerous agencies responded to the scene, including the Allegany County Hazardous Incident Response Team.

The rig was loaded with crossties when it fell into the river.
