— OAKLAND — Assault of a woman who showed up at an Accident man’s door led to the arrest of the occupant, Maryland State Police said.

Robert Daniel Smith Jr., 45, was arrested on first- and second-degree assault charges following the early evening incident Tuesday on Cover Lane.

Smith was held in the Garrett County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.

Police said the victim reportedly was yelling and beating on the door. Smith yelled to her to leave and return later. However, the victim continued to beat on the door.

The two argued outside before Smith allegedly punched the victim in the head, threw her to the ground and choked her until she lost consciousness.

A crowd gathered, prompting numerous calls to the barrack. Troopers arrested Smith without incident.

The victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
