CUMBERLAND — A city man who reportedly told police he hit his truck’s accelerator instead of the brakes before an accident on East First Street on Friday was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
Stephen Allan Smyth, 58, was attempting to back up his Dodge Ram pickup on Utah Avenue when he hit the accelerator instead and lost control of the vehicle, police said. Smith traveled into a yard, struck the corner of a residence and a Toyota pickup, causing it to strike a trailer. The house, Toyota truck and trailer were all damaged.
Police said Smyth, who was not injured, failed field sobriety tests and was arrested. At police headquarters, he was issued citations charging him with driving under the influence of alcohol, unsafe backing, negligent driving and failure to control speed to avoid a collision.
