Copper thieves may be burned - 08/29

EAST SAINT CLAIR, Pa. — Those who cut copper wire and caused up to $400,000 damage at a Bedford Rural Electric substation may have been burned, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The incident happened just after 8 p.m. Tuesday at 554 Quaker Valley Road and knocked out power to about 1,500 homes, according to Trooper Matthew Bonin.

Entry to the substation was gained when a fence was cut. The heat that was created when the wire to three regulators was cut was intense enough to melt concrete. The amount of damage to the main transformer has not yet been determined.

The thieves were able to get away with about 10 feet of copper wire.

Police may be contacted at 814-623-6133.
