Trooper 5 rescues stranded boaters - 05/06

ROMNEY, W.Va. — Two men who were trapped on a rock in the middle of the South Branch of the Potomac River were rescued Saturday by the Maryland State Police medevac helicopter Trooper 5, based at the Greater Cumberland Regional Airport.

The men’s fishing boat capsized in fast-moving water around 2 p.m. and Hampshire County emergency units requested Trooper 5. Kayakers reported seeing the men pinned between the overturned vessel and the rocks.

The helicopter crew performed an aerial search along several miles of the South Branch to locate the men, who were viewed from above as not injured but stranded on top of a rock in a portion of rapids.

The flight crew performed two aerial hoists, assisted by Hampshire rescue personnel on the ground and at the river. Each victim was taken to a field near the scene where they were treated for mild hypothermia. A paramedic with the Cumberland Fire Department responded on board Trooper 5 and assisted the flight crew with the aerial rescue.
