County sheriff warns of telephone scam - 07/15

Cumberland Times-News

— CUMBERLAND — The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of Allegany County regarding telephone scams, according to a press release from the office.

If a citizen receives a call from anyone saying you have won the lottery, a car or any other prize, it is likely a scam.

The caller will tell you in order to get your prize they need processing fees paid to them.  They will then tell you to obtain a gift card from your local Wal-Mart or any store that sells VISA gift cards and tell you to put a certain amount of money on the card, according to the sheriff’s office.

Once you get the card they will request that you call and give them the numbers from the gift card.

Once the scammers have this information you will be out the money and no prize will be forthcoming, the press release said.
