CUMBERLAND — MCCOOLE — Four people were taken from the NewPage Luke Converting Facility to hospitals following reports of an “unusual odor” at that location early Thursday, according to the Allegany County 911 center.

All four people were treated and released. Two patients were taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center and two were taken to  Potomac Valley Hospital at Keyser, W.Va., following the 12:03 a.m. incident. Tri-Towns EMS transported the patients.

NewPage spokeswoman Patsy Koontz said the building was evacuated and responding firemen from Luke, Westernport, Piedmont and Barton ventilated the structure. A hydraulic pump that was believed to be the source of the odor was shut down.

The converting facility returned to normal operation later in the day.

The incident remains under investigation by mill personnel.
