Man enters new plea in 1976 slaying - 11/08

FREDERICK (AP) — A man granted a new trial after his conviction in a 1976 slaying was overturned has pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to time served.

Prosecutors say 56-year-old Raymond Walker entered the plea Thursday in court in Frederick. He had served 37 years in prison in the shooting death of William Thompson.

Prosecutors said Walker shot Thompson while robbing his liquor store. He was convicted in January 1977.

Last year, the Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court, ruled that jury instructions prior to 1980 led to unfair trials.
