CUMBERLAND — Quick response of Cumberland Police to a “burglary in progress” complaint led to the arrest of a city man who was nabbed as he attempted to leave the scene.
City police responding to the 11:37 p.m. Thursday complaint observed a suspect inside a vacant Maryland Avenue residence.
The suspect quickly left the residence upon seeing the police officer but he was apprehended at the gate of the fenced property, police said.
Tracy Kerry Williams, 27, of Maryland Avenue, was arrested without incident on charges of malicious destruction of property, third- and fourth-degree breaking and entering, theft under $100 and disorderly conduct.
Following a bond hearing, Williams was jailed in the Allegany County Detention Center on $5,000 bond, pending bail review in district court.
Williams allegedly broke a rear window and then stole a bottle of prescription medication that belonged to a former tenant of the property.
