911 centers swamped with calls - 09/07

BEDFORD, Pa. — A scheduled controlled burn on Wills Mountain Friday by the Pennsylvania Game Commission created a large plume of smoke and generated numerous calls to 911 centers at Bedford and Cumberland.

The controlled burn on state game lands began at about 6:30 a.m. when the agency notified the Bedford County Control emergency center. The smoke was visible to residents in Bedford, Centerville and Hyndman, according to a Bedford 911 dispatcher.

“It’s just brush and cleanup,” said the dispatcher about the controlled burn when contacted by the Times-News.

The Allegany County 911 center said it had not received any advance notice of the controlled burn. Numerous calls were received by the center to report and inquire about the large volume of smoke rising above Wills Mountain at mid-morning.
