FORT ASHBY, W.Va. — A single-vehicle accident Friday on state Route 28 that claimed the life of a Springfield man and injured his wife remains under investigation by West Virginia State Police.
The 7 p.m. crash that occurred about 2 1/2 miles south of Fort Ashby claimed the life of the driver, 66-year-old Dennis Cotton, who died of injuries at the scene.
Virginia Cotton, a passenger in the 1979 Chevrolet Corvette, was flown by Maryland State Police medevac helicopter to the Winchester (Va.) Medical Center. Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, according to Cpl. J.E. Whisner, who is investigating the crash.
Witnesses told police the Cotton vehicle was traveling southbound when it left the west roadway edge, traveled over an embankment and then overturned and came to rest on its top.
