WESTERNPORT - Jamie Stowell tossed a two-hitter and also had two hits and two runs batted in to spark WEPCO Federal Credit Union to a 5-1 win over defending league champion Casselman Valley in the Rec League season opener for both teams Wednesday at Memorial Park.

Stowell allowed only a double by Greg Beachy and a single by Blake Walker in getting the complete-game win. He allowed only one baserunner over the final four innings, struck out three and was aided by solid team defense in a quick-paced game.

Stowell hit an RBI single in the second inning and had an RBI triple in the fourth. Josiah Dawson added two singles and Jeremy Shingler had an RBI single for WEPCO, which had seven hits.

Both teams play again Monday. WEPCO faces Hite Roofing at Bel Air while Casselman Valley hosts Greg's Auto at Salisbury in a 7:30 game.

FROSTBURG - Logan Thomas smacked a double and two singles and knocked in a pair of runs to lead Chessie to a win over Legion Post 13 in the season opener for both at the Armory field.

Josh Plummer added a triple and single and one RBI for Chessie, which snapped a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the fifth, then tacked on four insurance runs in the sixth.

Mike Hughes doubled and singled, Garrett Mathews singled twice and Mike Bradford had a double and an RBI for the Legion.

Chessie leftfielder Josh Bittner had the defensive play of the game with a diving catch near the fence to rob Dylan Norris of an extra-base hit in the top of the seventh inning.

Kevin Tummino scattered nine hits in a complete-game win.

The American Legion hosts the Times-News on Friday at Bowers Field. Chessie entertains the Barrelville ODC on Monday.
